Project Scope
The project "Conservation of habitats of special importance use, through methods that promote sustainable development and creation of eco-nord network", is an opportunity for the entire community of the region of Lezha, because it addresses the long-term solution for the endangered habitat; this coupled with the new administrative reform and promotion of a high level placement of a strict regime of forest protection for a 10-year period. This marks the beginning of a new and important phase of investment increase and conservation of important habitats in Lezha. The project will have a new product: the establishment of a hotspot for the improvement of the damaged habitat of oak forests in Kashnjet administrative unit in an area of 5 ha sage (Salvia officinalis); Built capacity for the new forest structure of the Municipality of Lezha; Built capacities of the residents in rural areas; Operational Manual produced; Digital base map and habitat maps the Municipality of Lezha, produced.

General Objective is:

The community support of protection and sustainable development of natural habitats through rational and technical use and exploitation.

Specific objective:

Develop the capacity to recognize and enforce the requirements for improving the protection of biodiversity at local institutional level and the local community;

Direct interventions on the ground to improve the biodiversity;

Raise community (local residents) awareness of biodiversity protection.

Drafting a guideline reflecting all the technology used in hotspots raised and, a publication related to the capacities built of the new forestry structures of the Municipality of Lezha in frame of the new territorial reform and the moratorium on forests.

The publication of a special section of the Green Crown Journal for each hotspot developed, and its delivery on all administrative units of northern area, subject of Eco-nord support, associated with posters and special RTV programs in local media.

Support community through creation of habitat maps of Lezha.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

The residents of the administrative units of Kallmet and Balldre, where two hotspots will be established for conservation of habitat of sage (Salvia officinalis) of 5 ha, in each area.

Residents of the administrative unit of Kolsh in designing and biological improvement of Kainari stream.

The villages of the Project‟s targeted areas.;

Local Government Unit representatives (2-4 representatives).;

Regional Agency of Protected Areas (Lezha unit) staff/Inspectorate of Environment and Forests staff (2-4 staff).

Farmers of the targeted areas (25 farmers)

Forest and Pasture User Associations of Lezha district;

Expected Results:

Built capacity for the new forest structure of the Municipality of Lezha;

Establishment of hotspots and conducting direct interventions by applying the most advanced technologies;

Project title: Promoting the improvement of indoor air quality in schools for a better health of our children

Project Scope
School is a delicate internal environment after school children represent a particular vulnerable group of population. Indoor air quality is of particular concern when it comes to children, whose physiological and behavioural characteristics make them especially vulnerable to environmental contaminants. In Shkodra region, more than 23404 pupils and 1536 Teachers spend a large part of their day in the school (including 9-jear system and gymnasium system). Children spend more time in the school than in other areas besides the house. Today concerns, as a result of pollutants in the school environment can affect their health, learning performance as well as their social and cultural development. The Creative City in partnership with Women in Integration initiated the initiative “Promoting the improvement of indoor air quality in schools for a better health of our children”. Nowadays, there are innovative solutions that can be implemented in the schools and other indoor public environment to absorb and clean the indoor air pollutants. The selected city schools are the followings: a) Ecological panels called “Breathe in School” and b) Most effective indoor plants absorbing pollutants in the indoor air. This project will provide support for schoolchildren and teachers, promote practical tools on indoor risk management as well as pilot best practices to reduce the indoor air pollutions including: monoxide carbonic, dioxide nitrogen (NO2), benzene, ethyl benzene, formaldehydes etc.

General Objective is:

A healthy environment and a better quality of indoor air practicing toward best model establishing for the environmental and health rights of the children in Shkodra region.

Specific objective:

TO RAISE awareness for the prevention of respiratory diseases, particularly among schoolchildren;.

TO PROMOTE innovative solutions so called “Breathe in School and Effective indoor plants/flowers” toward establishing best practice/model for a better health of our schoolchildren;

TO PILOT innovative tools in the selected target schools (ecological panels & effective indoor plants) toward reducing indoor air pollutants in the indoor schools environment.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

RAt least 2170 pupils and 294 teachers in the schools “Ismail Qemali”, “Ndre Mjeda” and “Pashko Vasa”.

At least Regional Education Directorate of Shkodra Region.

About 500-600 schoolchildren will gain knowledge on indoor air pollutants;

At least 60 teachers will benefit from a thematic OPEN HOURS planned to be conducted in the three schools;

Among beneficiaries are the University experts (at least 6 of them) whom will be engaged in the knowledge dissemination and the open hours;

NGOs (at least 20 of them) and the network of those ones whom will be supported by the EcoNord program;

At least 3-4 visual media and 4-5 written ones will be among beneficiaries since they will be strongly involved during the project implementation.

Expected Results:

At least 50 classrooms (one school) are equipped with ecological panels to pilot the best practice as an replication model from Italy in Albania;

At least 60 - 70 key actors, education authorities, schools parent committee representatives, donor agencies, business representatives, second level banks authorities are strongly involved in the project implementation;

At least 150 schoolchildren are engaged to the thematic exhibition “Clean air for better health of the children”

At least 100 children gain the knowledge and are able to express their knowledge through the drawing pictures;

At least 6 visual media (TVs), 1 radio station and 2 writing medias will be strongly involved accordingly;

The community outreach is monitored be our portal www.infoshkodra.com Today our audience counts 1976897 visitors;

Project Scope
The project focus is mainly biodiversity protection, yet our project foresees a cross sectoral multiple approach including also rare species and habitat protection, control of hunting, capacity building, raising awareness, ecotourism. The project area is Lezha region. One of the main attractions of Lezha is the already protected area of Kune-Vain-Tale which covers a territory of 4,393.2 ha and offers a wide variety of fauna and flora. It has special values in terms of biodiversity because it is the habitat for rare species such as aquatic reptiles and birds of prey, and it is a very important habitat for some special migratory birds. Uncontrolled hunting during the breeding seasons and illegal animals/birds hunting in the area has endangered its biodiversity and has forced some species to migrate (if not seriously affected their disappearance). The project is build upon two main pillars: (i) raising awareness on benefits to biodiversity revitalisation coming from the hunting ban in the protected area of Ishull Lezha; (ii) promoting eco-tourism paths in the region as the best way to match both benefits from tourism as well as respect for the nature and habitats. In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives the project is divided in two main phases in which different actions and activities will take place. At the first phase the field research and the study will take priority, whereas capacity building and awareness raisingtrainings and activities will be held at the second phase concrete intervention such as; three eco-tourist trails, guides for interested groups in bird-watching and eco-touristic trails, etc.

General Objective is:

The overall objective of this project proposal is to boost sustainable development of the natural environment through promotion of ecotourism in Lezha district.

Specific objective:

By sustainable development of the environment in the socio-economic context of Lezha we mean protecting ecologically sensitive areas; educating local communities/associates/tourists; and developing alternative revenue generating opportunities for the area by promoting ecotourism.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

Regional Environmental Agency staff.

Hunter associations – As one of the main affected interest groups, hunting associations operate actively in the area.

Local government officials -Representatives of local authorities and municipality directorates dealing with environment protection, tourism and education;

Educational institutions’ representatives (e.g. schools, regional education directorates, including young students, biologist teachers, school directors, specialists, parents etc.)

Media representatives/Journalists.

Expected Results:

Increased data collection and scientific knowledge regarding endangered.

Increased ownership of the community on the natural values of the area;

Increased profile of the area asan eco tourist destination of special interest

Project Scope
The Project is focusing on raised consciousness for the environment and the collection, differentiation and recycling of the refuses for young people who actually are at primary schools in Shkodra region (2 classes per 5 primary schools). In Shkodra waste/garbage problem is present (Just to bring to the attention, in Shkodra there are produced 65’904 tons of garbage annually) in almost every corner of the city, even in spaces between buildings in different areas of the city, there is a total lack of bins in these overcrowded parts. Part of the responsibility falls even to citizens who throw garbage everywhere they can, and that are totally unaware about differentiation and recycling. This project aims to promote among youngsters the respect for the environment and the opportunities that lie in the differentiation and recycling. The project is divided into two parts. A teaching phase and a competition phase. The educational phase relates to the treatment of environmental issues and the issue of waste in the specific differentiated collection and correct environmental practices. The competition phase foresees a competition aimed at the proper differentiated thrown materials. The final of the whole competition, with adjoining student awards participants, will be held at Arka Youth Center, while environment day organized by the association.

General Objective is:

Fostering the environmental education on collection, differentiation and recycling of waste at the Region of Shkodra.

Specific objective:

1 –Make possible for the children to acquire through the educational phase and the competition phase, habits and correct environmental conduct, with particular attention to the collection of waste /garbage, differentiation and recycling.
2 –To strengthen the belief of the children that, their commitment and their attention to environmental problems will lead to a better world for themselves and for future generations.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

The primary school students, about 2 classes per 5 primary schools, which are nearly 250 students.

The teachers of the primary schools, includes at least 3 teachers per school which means that least 15 teachers will receive adequate information.

The 5 primary schools that will be part of the project will be beneficiary of the 3 garbage bins used during the competition phase;

Expected Results:

250 Informed and committed students on correct environmental behaviour (teaching and competition phase).

15 Trained teachers about environmental issues (teaching phase competition phase).

Better developed curricula

1 publication “Love environment” adapted for children in order to foster their education and the love for the environment

10 Recycled products or projects at the end of the competition phase.

10 schools equipped with 3 garbage/waste bins (competition phase)

Cleaner schools (overall activities).

2 massive events with experts and testimonials. (200 participants)

Encouraged institutions for lobbying for the improvement of the teaching curricula in the matters of the good environmental behaviour (overall activities).

Enhancing the protection of Protected Areas in Malësia Madhe Municipality

Project Scope
The Project area where to be implemented is the Gruemira Administrative Unit, which is part of Malësia e Madhe Municipality. The administrative unit has almost 9000 inhabitants where the main activities are agriculture, livestock, fishery and some other small enterprises related to other kind of activities. The area limited from the national road and the lake is part of the Protected Area and Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake. The Protected Area is important for fish species and bird species giving the possibility to the local community to be sustained on these natural resources due to the high biological productivity. The project is focused on the sector of Ecosystem and habitats protection and restoration, biodiversity protection. The area of the project is a wetland habitat with very high potential in biodiversity and in biological production. The main threats to the habitat and biodiversity are urban waste pollution, lack of sustainable management, illegal activities, rapid urbanization, etc. The project has several interventions activities and is planned the cooperation among the Administration Unit of Gruemira (Municipality of Malësia e Madhe) and the Regional Agency of Protected Areas in Shkodra County. The activities planned are; A detailed report on the environmental situation and on the legal basis for the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake (the part of the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe), Urban waste removal from the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake in the Administrative Unit of Gruemira, Local community involvement in the protection of Protected Areas in the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe, and Natural values promotion of the Protected Areas in the Malësia e Madhe.

General Objective is:

Enhancing the protection of the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake through the cooperation among several stakeholders.

Specific objective:

The specific objective 1 Sustainable management of the Protected Areas in the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe
The specific objective 2 Habitat restoration of the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake in the Administrativ Unit of Gruemira
The specific objective 3 Promotion of the natural values of the Protected Areas in the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

The local community of the Administrative Unite of Gruemira has a population of more than 9000 inhabitants.

The local authorities like the Administrative Unite of Gruemira as part of the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe;

Regional Agency of Protected Areas;

Local Civil society organization and groups.

Expected Results:

The compilation of e detailed report on the situation of the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake cooperation of the local authorities and the Regional Agency of Protected Areas in the sustainable management of the Protected Areas. The project will facilitate the cooperation between the local government and the Regional Agency of Protected Areas through the qualified counselling given to them. These stakeholders will the right information and data to manage sustainably the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake.

The project will contribute to clean and remove from three hot spots of urban waste pollution in the Administrative Unite of Gruemira. The clean up activity will restore the natural habitats to their natural conditions.

Local community involvement in the ecosystem protection and restoration.

The project foreseen to produce 1000 leaflet and 500 brochures on the Ramsar Site of Shkodra Lake (the territory of the Municipality of Malësia e Madhe). Other results are 2 meeting with different local stakeholders and 10 awareness activities with local community in schools of the area.

Management and control of hunting and fishing

Project Scope
The Project will take place in Fierza Lake is the largest artificial lake in Albania. It lies between the mountains following the valleys of the river Drin. By way of location, Fierza Lake lies on the territory of four municipalities of: Municipality of Kukes; Municipality Krumë; Municipality Bajram Curri; and Municipality of Puka. There are about 30 villages near to the lake. Residents of these villages have their interests related directly to the Lake, as in: a) Employment; b) food source; c) Transport water; d) Tourism. In general, the population is about 150,000 inhabitants, and is interested in sustainable economic development in Lake Fierza. At present, in Lake Fierza economic fishing activity carried out by 72 fishing groups, which have spread their activities around the villages where they live. Transition periods are also brought abandonment fishing integral economic structures. Policulture fish fingerlings were produced not more. Aquaculture structures were abandoned. Immediately it began the decline of fish production. Demand for fish brought not respect the zones, time periods are natural reproduction. Economic fishery production began its decline continued. The project intervention consist on Strengthening of organization of Fisheries in Kukes, improve the fishery monitoring types in accordance with IUCN standards, monitoring of the food chain, monitoring of biological pollution through plangtonit, good management of economic and amateur fishing, and control and organise the amateur fishing groups on legal grounds.

General Objective is:

To develop an understanding on environment protection and to ensure an environment friendly approach by communities.

Specific objective:

The specific objective 1 is to raise awareness and capacities of fisherman groups in Fierza lake on controlling the monitoring of fisheries and hunting.
The specific objective 2 is to strengthening the capacities of Fisheries management organization of Kukes on planning and monitoring and to establish the formalised amateur fisheries organization and groups.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

72 fishing groups in Fierza Lake.

51 members of Fisheries management organization of Kukes;

Amateur fisheries groups and individuals.

Expected Results:

Methodology and equipment for monitoring of fisheries in Fierza Lake is established and functional.

Capacities of 71 fishermen are increased on controlling and monitoring types.

Professional’s fishermen groups and amateur group’s are well organised and aware for biological and trade time of fisheries.

One new association for amateur fishermen are established.

Project Scope
The Project will take place in Gjelagjosht basin which is about 320 hectares. It is located in the northern part of Peshkopi city and it is within the territory of Administrative Unit Kastriot and parts of it belong to Administrative Unit Tomin. It is surrounded by seven villages (Sohodoll, Kastriot, Shimcan, Zimur, Bahute, Limjan and Vrenjt villages) with a population of about ten thousand inhabitants. Gjelagjosht is one of the most degraded basins in Dibra region, where aided by land stripped off vegetation and steep terrain, thousand tons of run offs are annually deposited in Drini i Zi river. Deep tracks of erosion and vast stripped off area evidence this. This situation is critical and if not intervened, it may result in an irreversible damage, because the soil keeps impoverishing what will make impossible to plant any species. The negative impact also will be in landscape. The Project is focused on two main directions. The first direction pertains to erosion and sediment control awareness campaign in the areas surrounding Gjelagjosht basin. The second is focused on concrete action by piloting a model of erosion and sediment control in Gjelagjosht basin with broad participation of community. The method used with is through afforestation with chestnuts. This action will contribute in rehabilitation of a degraded area of 7 hectares.

General Objective is:

To develop an understanding on environment protection and to ensure an environment friendly approach by communities.

Specific objective:

The specific objective 1 is to raise awareness of community surrounding Gjelagjosht basin to improve practices of land and forest management, to directly contribute in erosion and sediment control and their incomes.
The specific objective 2 is to intervene for rehabilitation of the most degraded area of 6 hectares in Gjelagjosht basin through afforestation with the broad participatory of community.

Project target group;
The target group of these activities will be:

Farmers of the target area (Sohodoll, Kastriot, Shimcan, Zimur, Bahute, Limjan and Vrenjt villages).

Local government staff;

FPUAs, communities, and citizens of Diber region.

Expected Results:

Community of the targeted area is acquainted with the negative impacts of erosion and the practices of land and forest management are improved and incomes increased.

7 hectares of most degraded area from erosion is rehabilitated and the model of direct intervention in erosion control with broad participation of community is given.

Advise, model and establish rules to improve the environment in the crown of the city of Peshkopi

Project Scope
The project is focus on local economic development and the main target group are rural actors in Peshkopi. Protecting land from erosion is very important for income generation for the poor and rural economies of Staravec, Llizha, Shimcan villagers and Peshkopi town neighbourhoods. Land sustainable management and combating soil erosion will positively affect the economic situation of these poor areas. The project consists of the rehabilitation of an area with a contusion and no vegetation at the entrance of the town of Peshkopi to the east. These areas have not only collapse and erosion due to the lack of vegetation, but are also made garbage collection site. Whenever it rains in these territories erosion and collapse continues that affects the decay of roads, houses and lands at the bottom of the basin where the town of Peshkopi lies. The project planned investment will bring disposition of the retaining walls and the cone lateral walls of the stream, as well as the enhancement of vegetation, protecting the empty surfaces but also densifying where there is no vegetation by planting multifunctional trees. In these territories the project, will also remove all remnants of the cast and provide opportunities for a place for waste collection and transportation in the future. Very important in this project also remains the work to be done for the awareness of residents to enhance care for environmental protection, care for purification and growth of vegetation. The establishment of citizen groups in neighbourhoods where we are going to work are structures that will work to take long-term decisions for the environment in these territories.

General Objective is:

To achieve the improvement of endangered environment and raised awareness of inhabitants for the importance of environmental maintenance.

Specific objective:

1. Making people aware on protection of an endangered surface of 300 ha in Peshkopi territory;
2. Establishment of pilot models (rehabilitation with antierosion simple works to stream in the neighbourhoods of Lushe, Staravec, Creation of green areas by planting trees on an area of 3 hectares of land with different types of multifunctional species)

Project Scope
The project will be implemented in the Areas of Vau-Dejës Municipality and Shkodra Municipality, specifically, targeting 2 (two) schools and the nearby communities, this to be implemented within a 9 (nine) month period of time. Furthermore, project activities focusing on environment education of youth through specific themes actions in towards environment protection, lobbying and advocacy and environment in general will significantly impact sustainable management of the environment. Youth have special concerns and also special responsibilities in relation to the environment. Young people will be compelled to engage in new forms of action and activism that will generate effective responses to ecological challenges. Future generations will also be affected by these decisions and the extent to which they have addressed concerns such as the depletion of resources, the loss of biodiversity. There area the main topics and concerns of this project.

General Objective is:

To protect the environment of the future for young people of Shkodra region in order to positively impacting Albania’s SAA obligations'. The specific objectives are:

To establish a multifaceted approach for generating comprehensive information on the environmental protection to be disseminated among well targeted audiences at the targeted areas
To promote sustainable and inclusive efforts in the identification and design of specific actions to address environmental issues through environment education measures
To implement the environmental rehabilitation actions through increased of green areas by tree planting

The main areas where the project will be focused, are
1. One school in Vaudejes municipality
2. One school in Shkoder municipality
The target group of these activities will be:

The pupils/students of the 2 (two) targeted schools;

The public bodies/institutions of the 2 (two) targeted areas;

Tourist industry and tourists.

Expected Results:

A) A well established practice of cooperation based on and encouraging the involvement of key local stakeholders.

B) Open source of “easy-to-digest-information” on the environmental protection and disseminated among well targeted audiences within the targeted areas.

C) Concrete action plans designed by a multiplicity of local actors and stakeholders with the purpose of addressing environmental challenges of the targeted areas.

D) Increased awareness of local communities and their involvement on voluntary basis to carry out recurring actions protecting the targeted area eco-system through the support of local authorities.

E) A draft Action Plan of the respective local authorities on both targeted areas of the border to support sustainable efforts for the protection of the environment

F) Approximately 24 (twenty-four) trees planted in the 2 (two) targeted schools.

G) Approximately 2 targeted Public Garden cleaned in the two targeted areas of Vau-Dejës & Shkodër

Increase “community environmental vigillance" for the businesses that produce environmental pollution in Klos Municipality

Project Scope
In Klos Municipality operating about 20 businesses, that fabricate environmental pollution, ranging from private wood business, Cërujës mines etc. From a preliminary assessment conducted by our organization it appears that, a part of the municipality Klos businesses that cause environmental pollution is carried out in breach of legislation governing environmental procedures, the lack of transparency for public involvement under environmental law is violated obligation on the part of public institutions, and referring to the environmental aspect, it appears that businesses and public institutions have not taken into account the provisions contained in the law "On Environmental Protection", the law "On the integrated waste management", as it threatens to affect natural resources such as forests and pastures, which in the final analysis constitute vulnerability to environmental conservation or community needs. The focus of project is community advocacy and lobbying, to minimize environmental pollution caused by businesses operating in the Municipality of Klos. We proposed the establishment of a civic committee near to Klos City Council. An agreement was enabled through the support of the Municipality of Klos as participating in the project activities and contribution to the project. It will provide support to the local TV Mat, for recording and transmission of activities of the project. We will also collaborate with other media ( Newspaper “Mjedisi sot”). Also the web portal will establish for "Green Denounce".

Specific objective:

1. Municipality of Klos focused on environmental policies.

2. Strengthening transparency, encouraging active participation of citizens, local authorities, civil society and stakeholders in environmental monitoring.

3. Undertake concrete actions by local businesses and local authorities to improve the environmental situation in the Municipality of Klos.

Project target group;
1. citizens of the Municipality of Klos (20,000 inhabitants). 2. local government structures;

Project Scope
Shkoder district has made significant progress in expanding its network of Protected Areas (PA) of 3.2% of the territory in 2005 to 25% in 2015. About 80% of this natural heritage is the wetlands areas: 1. Shkoder Lake and 2. Buna River - Velipoje 'both categories' natural reserves managed and RAMSAR (international convention on wetlands and biodiversity). They belong to two neighbouring municipalities of Shkoder and Malesi e Madhe. Those last 7 years the high pressure against the environment is increasing dramatically, due to the abusive corruption from local and central decision makers which permit the deterioration of the environment through illegal investments in those areas. Therefore it’s necessary to raise the local public awareness about the natural heritage such as, the decision and policy makers about the PA’s (RAPA Shkoder, Municipality of Shkoder, Malesi e Madhe, Central Government), the community living in Shkoder region in general, and to the inhabitants next to the PAs in particular.

Our goal is to raise awareness of the inhabitants living in Protected Areas of Shkoder municipality, and the decision and policy makers on the PA’s, about the importance of the environmental conservation and to make more visible the Protected Areas as zones with high economical and social opportunities for all the community.

Specific objective:

The specific Objectives is to contribute on Preservation of biodiversity and Promotion of ecoturism development in Shkodra region and northen Albania.

Project target group;
The main areas where the project will be focused, are
1. Shiroka - Zogaj villages (at the shore of Shkoder Lake)
2. Dajc B/B and Ana Malit communes (Buna River)
3. Velipoja and Baks-Rrjoll (coastal villages at Buna River Wetland).
The target group of these activities will be:

students of five elementary schools (Protected Areas of Shkoder region)

students of ‘Luigj Gurakuqi’ University, Shkoder (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Economy),

decision makers from Shkoder region

stakeholders related to environmental and tourism issues (such as: fishermen, small businesses, farmers, guesthouses, restaurants, guides, tour agencies etc)

and indirectly, visitors and tourists who visit those natural heritages, students’ parents, teachers and professors. (PAs).

Expected Results:

Informing the residents of Protected Areas: villages along the Lake of Shkodra, Buna river and seacost,because actually they have a very low information about living in a protected area and the economical and social benefits that can raise from this.

Awareness of the new decisionmakers in the Municipality of Shkodra (but not only, even the district of Shkoder, Lezha, Kukes and Diber). By the time being, we see the neccesity to bring together the decision makers and the community, to create a partnership for the benefit of all parties involved.

Educating the young generations in fivepilot schools of the respective Protected Areas (Shiroke-Zogaj, Velipoje-Baks Rrjoll, Dajc B/B and Ana Malit communes) because they are the voice of the future and if they get aware of the importance of the zones where they live, the positive outcomes from their preservetion and how they can benefit to the best without damaging these zones, than this young people will inherit this education to their children tomorrow.

Promotion of the PA, as the potential for the development of ecotourism and the economical improvement in these areas.

Protection of biodiversity of Puka Mountain

Project scope
AGROPUKA association proposes to implement a project that focuses on protection and improvement of biodiversity in the wild areas of Puka municipality. Puka area is considered among the poorest areas in Albania. The poverty rates in the region are round 18 %. Unemployment is as high as 32% rising to more than 60% for youth. Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are one of main sources of income for a large percentage of families from the rural communities of mountainous areas such as Puka. Puka has a tradition in harvesting and manipulation of medical and aromatic plants. However, the caotic harvesting of the non-timber products and medical and aromatic plants combined with the damages to the forests by the fires and brutal use have resulted in degradation of many areas and reduction of the medical and aromatic plants.

The specific objective of the project is “to improve the sustainable use of non-timber forest products through an inclusive and integrated approach”. The implementation of this project would contribute to the achievement of two general goals: (1) Promotion of biodiversity in the areas of Puka municipality; and (2) Sustainable rural development in the areas of Puka and municipality.

Project target group;
The target groups will be:

Farmers from the rural/mountainous area of Puka (harvesters and home processors. The activities will intend to increase their capacities and skills on sustainable harvesting and manipulation of NTFPs, how to add value to the chain and market the NTFPs to collectors.

Young people from the rural/mountainous area of Puka municipality.

Staff of municipality of Puka. It is local self government unit with an important role in enabling the environment for sustainable development and management of NTFPs.

Expected Results:

1. Sustainable increase of the volume of non-timber forest products;

2. Increased awareness of people from rural communities relating to the importance of plant diversity and the need for their conservation and sustainable use; and

Protection and regeneration of ecosystem and habitats in forest of Helshan village

The project area selected is a well-known for nature resources and eco-tourism destination. It is the home to several important medicinal and aromatic plants species and amongst the few areas where such plants are cultivated for poverty mitigations. The project is focused on the Malesia e Madhe area that includes the local administrative units of Kelmend Shkrel and Kastrat. The area is one of the areas with richest biodiversity in the region. It is famous for the diversity of its landscapes and it exceptional natural resources which are important assets for ecotourism and adventure tourism in this area. The local mountains are wild and beautiful. Sheep graze here and life for people living in the foothills is not easy. The region, despite its backward economic situation is endowed with unique natural resources and a culture heritage of its own. The landscape is characterized by Alpine pastures and meadows, and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pine (Pinus nigra Arn. and P. mugo Turra) forests in the highest areas, whilehornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop. and Carpinus betulus L.) forests dominate the landscape at the lower altitudes.

The main objective of the project is to create preconditions for evaluation, effective and responsible use of the biodiversity and natural resources in the targeted regions, thus enhancing the sustainable development of ecotourism in the area and ensuring stable economic growth.;

Specific objective:

To increase the capacity of the local population for nature conservation and to effectively involve green business (ecotourism, medicinal plants, etc.) in the process of conservation of natural resources and stable economic growth in an area with high biological diversity.

Promote nature conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity values through the participation of youth and women community

Project target group;
The project will specifically target capacity building of local biodiversity-based business, NGOs/CSOs involved in environment protection, nature conservation and promotion but also selected individuals from state institutes and interest groups. Therefore it will involve professionals, amateur experts, schools and the interested public (from specific/selected local administrate units) in biodiversity assessment. The project will specifically target as well as gender balance. More specifically, the target groups will be:

Local biodiversity-based business; (Harvesters and producers of cultivated MAPs; Collectors and consolidators; Processors and exporters.)

Local environmental and regional development authorities and management bodies of protected area;

Local government unit’s administration;

Tourism operators/Hostels Network in the area

Expected Results:

The partnership between local authorities, NGO-s and businesses working on nature conservation and protection and ecotourism is promoted.

An integrated basic report study for the main biodiversity values of the area linked to the agricultural social impacts in using the natural and important plant species is elaborated.

An orientation map of the area with the presence and location of the main important natural habitats of MAPs and forest fruits is defined and published.

The knowledge of at least 40 participants, representatives from target groups with different element necessary for the best practices and the EU approach, including the agro-biodiversity activities is increased.

Bridges of cooperation between the local harvester and network of Hostels/Bujtinat in the area is established. 5 exhibition and sales stands for promoting and marketing of the MAPs & forest fruits from the area provided in 5 Hostels in the project area.

MAPs and forest fruits basically information, an integrated part of the extra biology curricula practices in the tow pilot high schools of the project area.

Local communities of women and youth are aware on benefits and opportunities from developing green business and local tourism in support to local development;

Natural products and values are developed in line with the preservation of natural heritage and habitat conservation. One fair event for the promotion of local products supporting the sustainable use of biodiversity value is organized and available to be used as a local tradition approach in the coming years.

Through sustainable use of water and natural resources, is expected to increase the number of terrestrial and aquatic fauna of the area, expect a sustainable natural rehabilitation and a population of river waters with fish and underwater fauna.

Increasing and strengthening of the organizational capacity of local management ENGs, for biodiversity protection in the area and sustainable growth of the inhabitants of the area;

Stabilization and strengthening of the capacity building of the Environmental Forum, with other local organizations to follow and the continuation of the project.

Improving the negative environmental impact of the flooding phenomena in Lezha region.

Specific Objective:

Reducing the negative environmental impact of the floods in Lezha region (before, during and after flooding phenomena), in the water basin of Drini and Mati rivers in an area of about 80 sq km, through the raising awareness and capacities of local stakeholders on taking adequate measures for preventative, responsive, and improve the negative effect of flooding in biodiversity and wildlife of this area.

Expected Results:

To contribute towards the sustainable protection of rare endemic agricultural and wild fruit/nut plants in the geographical area of Fushë-Arrëz municipality.

Specific Results:

To prevent the extinction of varieties of endemic agricultural and wild fruit/nut plants in the Fushë-Arrëz area

To inform and raise awareness of farmers on rare endemic agricultural plants and wild fruit/nut plants, on their usefulness for agriculture and characteristics of cultivation through strengthening cooperation among community and LGU

Promoting more widespread cultivation/use of rare endemic plants for food production.

Economic development of the local agriculture of Fushë-Arrëz area through diversification of products (which would also stimulate agro-tourism).

Expected Results:

At least 10 rare endemic agricultural plants, wild fruit/nut trees will be explored and collected.

At least 65 farmers trained during the training/workshops related to seed values, importance and when it can be found and will be informed on-site during the farm visits on these endemic plants and their cultivation

At least 5 NGO-s and state institutions will participate and be informed in the activities of the project

At least 4 Local Media representatives (printed and electronics) with special focus on environment issues will be informed on the issue and the activities of the project

100 copies of brochures will be distributed to the agricultural department specialists, agronomists, farmers of Fushë-Arrëz, informing them on the issues

At least 40 participants (beneficiaries, experts, decision-makers) will be informed on the project results and will advocate for further intervention on the Final Conference

At least 10,000 persons from the public will be informed on the biodiversity of endemic agricultural plants through a documentary produced during the project.

The major goal of this project is the evaluation/appraisal of biodiversity values in Mirdita region and its sustainable use through best management practices.

Specific Objective:

Sustainable use of biodiversity in the territory of Mirdita through best management practices in this respect

Involvement of new generations (school students) in the process of evaluation/appraisal and promotion of biodiversity values;

1. Increase of farmers’ income through practices of sustainable use of biodiversity values

Expected Results:

An inventory of the biodiversity of Mirdita region, focusing mainly on the flora bringing the variety and natural values of the region to the attention of the stakeholders. The final product will be an inventory list of flora and fauna in the region of Mirdita.

An evaluation/assessment of the biodiversity values in the region. This is the major activity of this project. The final product will be an analysis (report) containing major biodiversity elements and values they offer to people and ecosystems.

To analyze stakeholders who deal with biodiversity in the region (who does what), relevant issues and problems as well as to give relevant recommendations to improve the situation. The final product will be a report on main findings regarding the major stakeholders, their role and duties, relevant problems and issues, etc

Increased awareness of the new generation (high school students) in the process of acquaintance with and evaluation/appreciation of region’s biodiversity values, considering this as a “future investment”, in respect of biodiversity conservation.

Improvement of knowledge of major stakeholders (Communal Forest User Associations, farmers, collectors of medicinal plants, local authorities etc) through training.

A web-platform (app-based) for the protection of the environment is operational facilitating the organization of ECs and the protection of the environment

High urban decorative trees are planted by the ECs in the three LGUs
